Haiti - July 2010 Update

Thanks to the generous donations that we received in response to the earthquake disaster in Haiti, we were able to hit the ground running. At this point in time, we have invested approximately half of this year's Haiti program budget and expect to spend the balance in the expansion program that is already underway.

When Haiti was devastated by the earthquake, our number one concern was the coming rainy season and how this would further complicate access to clean safe drinking water for Haitians. The Water School had just finished translating training manuals into the Creole language and was about to start training Haitians on The Water School program.

The earthquake forced The Water School to scale up the Haiti project and roll it out sooner than we anticipated. We also quickly realised that there was an exodus of Haitians who survived the earthquake from Port-au-Prince to rural areas where there was hardly any devastation. That is where we decided to go. The donations that we received immediately after the earthquake enabled The Water School to introduce our program in 3 villages in the northern part of the country and will expand to 10 villages by the end of the year. We discovered that eighteen additional villages had already taken the initiative to implement SODIS and we decided to work with these villages to ensure it is being done correctly and integrated with sanitation and hygiene education.

Without the support of our donors, many Haitians in the communities we are working in would still be struggling with access to clean water. Thank you for your continued support!
